Safeguarding our learners is everyone's number 1 priority!

How we care for & safeguard all

Pastoral Care

At Keats Engineering and Education, we prioritise the wellbeing and personal development of all our students. Our pastoral care includes:

  • Dedicated pastoral team providing emotional and social support

  • One-to-one wellbeing sessions and guidance for students in greater need

  • Support for mental health and wellbeing, including referrals to external services

  • Regular check-ins and a safe space for students to talk

  • Tailored PSHE teaching around resilience, self-esteem, and emotional literacy

  • Half termly tracking of EHCP targets that are RAG rated and broken down into manageable and accessible smaller steps

  • Our students have constant access to our designated Chill out room which is a safe space for them to regulate with support if needed.

Safeguarding

The safety and wellbeing of our students is our top priority. We have the following safeguarding measures in place:

  • A trained Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) supported by a team of Deputy DSLs

  • Robust child protection policies and procedures

  • Weekly safeguarding training for all staff to identify and respond to concerns

  • Confidential reporting systems for students and staff

  • Collaboration with external safeguarding agencies

  • Visits from external agencies and services to support the delivery of our PSHE curriculum.

Meet Beau – Our Wonderful Education Dog!

We’re delighted to introduce Beau, our beautiful Cockapoo and Education Dog!

Beau has been professionally trained and will undergo her official temperament test at 18 months old, with annual re-evaluations thereafter. She has already passed several mock tests with flying colours, but she won’t officially start working until she reaches 18 months. In the meantime, she’s attending work three times a week to familiarise herself with the busy environment, new scents, and sounds. While she’s not working directly with students just yet, she’s already meeting them and getting used to her surroundings.

Once she turns 18 months, her role won’t change too much—she will continue to be a positive and calming presence for our students. However, under supervision, students will then be able to pet her and take her for short walks with her handler, Tom.

Beau is fully covered with vet insurance for working dogs and has her own public liability insurance.

She is the only dog permitted on-site and is owned by Tom Wiles, the Director of Keats Engineering & Education LTD and Pontefract Collieries FC. Tom is Beau’s handler and is responsible for her care both on-site and at all times. She also lives with Tom and his family.

If you have a dog allergy, please let us know before your visit. While Beau is hypoallergenic—she hardly sheds and is groomed daily—we want to ensure a comfortable environment for everyone.

Beau is excited to officially start her role and can’t wait to meet and support as many young people as possible!

Meet Tina Connell, Our Head of Pastoral Support and SENDCo

At Keats, we’re passionate about creating a safe, nurturing environment where every student feels supported to grow and thrive. We’re delighted to introduce Tina Connell, our permanent Head of Pastoral Support and SENDCo, who plays a vital role in ensuring the wellbeing and success of our students.

Tina is dedicated to supporting students’ emotional and social development, offering in-the-moment wellbeing check-ins whenever they need a listening ear or a helping hand. Her caring nature and expertise make a real difference in helping students feel understood and valued. Tina is also currently training to become a qualified Level 5 counsellor, specialising in working with children and young people, which will add an extra layer of support for our students as they navigate life’s challenges.

To further support our students’ wellbeing, we have a designated chill-out room—a calming space equipped with sensory lighting and resources to help students relax and find their balance when they need a break. This room has been a wonderful addition to our setting, offering a safe space where students can take a moment for themselves.

Tina also delivers weekly PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Emotional) lessons, which are designed to help students build confidence, resilience, and important life skills. These lessons form part of the wider curriculum at Keats and ensure students are equipped not just academically, but emotionally and socially too.

Every student at Keats is unique, and we take great pride in creating individual programmes of study tailored to their specific needs and aspirations. By listening closely to students and their families, we ensure that each student is catered for in a way that helps them make meaningful progress toward their Pathway for Adulthood.

Parents often tell us how much they value the care and support their children receive at Keats. They speak of the safe and secure environment we provide and the incredible progress their children make—academically, socially, and emotionally. We take great pride in knowing that students leave our setting not only with improved confidence and knowledge but also with real-life skills that prepare them for the future.

Whether it’s learning about sports coaching, construction, or welding, our students gain practical skills that set them up for success in their next steps. With our tailored support and the guidance of compassionate professionals, Keats is a place where students flourish and feel empowered to take on the world.

If you’d like to know more about how we support our students in terms of their well being, or have any questions about what we offer, we’d love to hear from you. At Keats, we’re here to help every student—and their family—feel welcome, supported, and ready for success.
