Transforming wasteland into a community asset
Course Aims

The aim of this programme is to provide students with the opportunity to develop practical horticulture and landscaping skills within a supportive learning environment. Students will gain hands-on experience in a range of essential horticultural tasks, enabling them to build confidence, enhance employability skills, and develop an understanding of working within the horticulture and grounds maintenance industry.

The course also promotes the development of teamwork, responsibility, and problem-solving skills through practical outdoor activities and project-based learning.

Student Outcomes and Progression

Upon completion of the programme, students will have developed a range of practical horticultural skills and a foundational understanding of garden maintenance and landscaping techniques.

Initially, the programme will be delivered as a non-accredited course, with a City & Guilds qualification to be introduced at a later stage. Students will work towards the Level 1 Practical Horticulture Skills qualification, designed for individuals who wish to begin a career in horticulture or develop practical gardening and landscaping skills.

This qualification is primarily practical and will be assessed through ongoing practical assessments.

Learners will develop a broad range of horticultural and landscaping skills through units such as:

  • Preparing for sowing or planting under supervision

  • Planting container-grown plants

  • Preparing soil and applying organic mulch

  • Watering beds, borders, and planted containers

  • Using a wheeled rotary mower

  • Laying paving slabs

  • Laying paving blocks on sand.

In addition, learners will take part in the design, construction, and development of the new horticulture unit at Keats, providing valuable hands-on experience within a real working environment.
